In light of the recent abolishment of NHS surcharge for foreign healthcare workers announced on the 21st of May 2020 , we would like to express our utmost gratitude to our fellow IKRAM member Dr Siti Noor Munirah Ibrahim for her courage and contribution in pioneering the campaign which led to the success of this very movement.
For many years this issue has been of concern amongst foreign healthcare workers but has never been properly addressed, and in fact was due for a further rise later this year. In 2019, Dr Munirah took it upon herself to champion this issue and was at the forefront of this battle alongside her colleague, Dr Julia Grace from EveryDoctor. She even brought the issue to public attention by agreeing to be featured in The Guardian , a risk not many would dare to take.
A year later, we are now able to reap the benefits of this campaign in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, a time when NHS workers are under extreme pressures.
IKRAM United Kingdom & Eire (IKRAM UKE) are very proud to have an inspiring member such as Dr Munirah who has continuously demonstrated efforts in giving back to the community. In 2019 she was awarded the Saidatina Khadijah Award by IKRAM UKE for her achievements as an active member and also the Chavez Amen Community Spirit Award in Rotherham for her contribution to overseas doctors’ welfare and charity work. Despite having returned to Malaysia with her family, her efforts will not be forgotten by her colleagues in the UK.
We wish her the very best in her future endeavours and may Allah reward her for her deeds.
