SEMAWAR: Seminar for Muslim Women

BIRMINGHAM, 10 MARCH 2017 – On Saturday 4th March 2017, from 9am till 4pm, our annual Seminar for Muslim Women (SEMAWAR) was participated by ladies of all ages with great potential, mashaAllah. It was an event held exclusively for women with inspiring talks and interesting activities.

The status of women in society is neither a new issue nor is it a fully settled one. In the midst of the darkness that once engulfed the world, the divine revelation echoed in the wide desert of Arabia with a fresh, noble and universal message to humanity: “O mankind, keep your duty to your Lord who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate and from them twain has spread a multitude of men and women” (An-Nisa:1). Therefore, SEMAWAR 2017 decided to uphold the message and to celebrate all women, by organising an event with an exciting lineup of activities. With the theme “Beautiful Inside Out”, the seminar is hoped to bring out the best in every woman, who is created by Allah beautiful not only in our external appearance but also through our akhlaq, talents and potentials.

The day was started with the recitation of the holy verses of the Quran and was followed by the forum titled: “Unearthing Your Potential, Making a Difference”. The topic was highly engaging and was discussed by two very distinguished guest speakers. Dr Fauziah Mohd Hasan, is a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, and was also the Malaysian representative on the recent Women’s Boat to Gaza. Sister Ameena Blake, is currently Director of the Eden Houses project in the UK and previously the assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain. Both of the speakers gave inspiration to all the participants in unearthing each and every potential they have in themselves, and to grab any opportunity in spreading goodness and kindness in this world, regardless of one’s age. As Sister Ameena said, “When you had nothing, and you found something, you just never want to let it go“, while Dr Fauziah clearly suggested that, “If it is not now, then when? If it is not you, then who?”.

After lunch and Zuhur prayers, the event continued with workshops on Self-Defence, Women’s Health and Massage Therapy. All the techniques and tips were shared by experts in the relevant areas and were of very great importance to women, generating awareness on women’s safety and health. Booths, charity sales and also fun activities for the kids also made the event more exciting, and not to forget the amazing performances by our own talented sisters.

During the closing ceremony, three dUCk scarves were handed out to the winners of the competitions organised prior to the event: the “Beautiful Inside Out” photography, the “OOTD” best dressed and “My Hijab Story” write-up contests. Shown below are among the photographs submitted for the competition.

Alhamdulillah we were blessed with around 120 participants from all over UK and Ireland. Many thanks to those who contributed to the event, either in the form of effort, time and money in ensuring the event ran smoothly. We sincerely hope the event has benefited each and every inspirational and talented woman that attended, those of whom have great potential to make amazing changes in the future insha Allah.
